Anna Scoville will be the lone representative for Stone Memorial High School this weekend at the Tennessee Secondary Sports Athletic Association State Wrestling Championships at the Williamson County AgExpo Center in Franklin.
Scoville qualified to keep her season going and earn a spot in the state contest by finishing fourth last weekend at the region at 120 pounds.
“Anna wrestled very well, and we’re excited she was able to earn a spot in the state meet,” said Stone Memorial coach Brian Parker. “She worked hard, and she was focused.”
Scoville opened the day with a decision over Hannah Creller of Walker Valley. She lost her next match to Mary Bickford of Sequatchie County, before running off three straight wins, taking victories over Prudence Peterson of Tullahoma, Julieta Alonzo of Franklin County and Payton Robertson of Coffee County in the semifinal of the consolation bracket. She lost the third place match to Bickford.
Her teammate, Alina Thompson, won the fifth place match at 126 pounds. Thompson beat Olive Smith of Baylor in the first round. She lost her next match to Lillian Deschamp of Cookeville. She came back to knock down Julia Sumpter of St., Andrews and Chelsea Authier of Cumberland County in the third round of the consolation bracket. She lost to Ayden Schultz, but came right back to take down Aubrey Schmitt of Walker Valley.
In the boys division of the sectional meet, Trenton Duncan set the pace for the Panthers by reaching the consolation semifinals at 150 pounds. Duncan beat Jesse Fowler of Chattanooga in the quarterfinals. However, he lost two straight matches after that with decisions to Wyatt Davis of Whitwell and Wyatt Payne of Samuel Everett.
All other Stone Memorial wrestlers lost their first two matches in their divisions.
Jack Nealey at 113 pounds lost to Mason Shrum of Marion County and was then beaten by Benjamin Price. Dalton Platz, wrestling at 126 pounds, dropped narrow decisions to Atticus Younes of Sequatchie and Oliver Green at Signal Mountain.
Chandler Gavin lost both of his matches in the 138-pound division of the sectional meet. He was knocked off by Andrew Lewis of Soddy Daisy and then he lost Dublin McGonagil of Red Bank. Jonnathen Aguirre wrestled in the 157-pound division. He lost of Elijah Turner of Soddy Daisy, and then to Ian Von Loh of Hixson. Aiden Thompson, a standout all season at 165 pounds for the Panthers. was knocked off by Tucker Ross of Soddy Daisy and Jett Evans of Heritage.
“The boys just got beat up,” said Parker. “It was a very tough sectional tournament, the state champion and the third place team were in the field. Everyone was 2-and-out except Trenton. He lost by one point in the semifinals of the consolation bracket. It was heartbreaking.”
The state meet is tentatively set to start Feb. 23 at 9 a.m. CT
