Every time a new year comes around, I flashback to when someone asked me, “have you ever considered being a SCORE mentor?” I didn’t think I had enough experience to do so.
But I summoned the courage to sign on and have never regretted it. Being a mentor has been extremely rewarding. In fact, I’d have to say it ranks right up there with some of the most gratifying experiences in my life. Not only has it been an opportunity to give back, it has also given a lot to me.
Twenty-eight years ago, I sat with a SCORE mentor. I was considering purchasing a business and I was scared to death. An opportunity presented itself to me and I was faced with the huge decision of leaving the security of full-time employment to become a business owner.
Every fiber in my body was telling me that this was an opportunity I could not pass up. It felt so right. But my head was spinning with doubts and anxiety.
My SCORE mentor affirmed what my gut was telling me. This was a great opportunity and it made good business sense. So, I made the move, bought the business and never regretted that decision.
The experience I was able to gain during those years as a business owner amazes me. I had to wear every hat. I was the accountant, the shipping clerk, the marketing department, the janitor, the inventory clerk, the graphic designer….you name it.
That experience mixed with years of work as an employee and just fumbling through the school of hard knocks gave me more than enough tools in my toolbox to be a big help to those who have questions about running a business.
Maybe you are feeling the same as I did, unsure of your ability to serve as a mentor. Then let me ask you these questions: Are you a good listener? Has your professional experience been in the areas of management, finance, accounting, legal work, banking, or other related fields of business? Do you have a heart for encouraging others? Do you have space in your life for volunteer service? Would you enjoy a stimulating environment of vibrant and interesting colleagues?
The Northern Michigan SCORE chapter is alive and well. New mentors and volunteers are coming on board. Exciting things are happening.
If this sounds interesting, contact our chapter to explore the possibility of becoming a mentor. Training, guidance and support are available. Reach out to the chapter president — jeff.hamilton@scorevolunteer.org if you would like to investigate this opportunity to serve our region in a very meaningful way.
The world needs positive role models and encouragers. There are dreams to be fulfilled and as a SCORE mentor you can help make these dreams a reality.
