SCHROON LAKE — Four Schroon Lake/Newcomb players finished in double figures Wednesday night to provide the difference in a 69-58 victory over Boquet Valley in a Mountain & Valley Athletic Conference Northern Division boys’ basketball showdown.
Schroon Lake/Newcomb avenged an earlier loss to the Griffins and the two teams combined to hit 19 three-pointers in the contest. Boquet Valley had entered the game unbeaten in league play.
Logan Bush paced Schroon Lake/Newcomb with 19 points, while Josiah Melville added 17, Austin Hartwell 16 and Nathan Melville 10.
Boquet Valley, which held a slim 30-29 lead at the half, was paced by Jackson Hooper and Carson Leibeck with 19 points apiece, with Leibeck connecting on five three-pointers. Maddox Rice chipped in with 15 points.
“This was a quality win against a good team tonight,” Schroon Lake/Newcomb coach Lee Silvernail said. “We put together a game plan and did a good job executing it. We had contributions from the whole team.
“We had some struggles with their size, expected it to be a battle inside and we were able to limit their offensive rebounds. Each time they were able to make a run in the second half, we were able to come down and hit some big shots.”

SARANAC 54
TICONDEROGA 34
SARANAC — This was a game where the score doesn’t tell the full story. It was much closer than the 54-34 win for Saranac would tell you.
It was a close game until the fourth quarter, when the Spartans made five three pointers in a row to blow the game open.
“I felt going into this game that it would be a competitive game,” Saranac’s Tim Newell said. Ticonderoga is very well coached and they have a nice nucleus of players.
“The game went back and forth through three quarters with neither team able to extend a lead.”
The spark came from Mchenna Brown who hit two threes back-to-back. This was followed by the clutch shooting of Molly Denis and Brenna Ducatte who added two and one three-pointers, respectively.
Once this run was made, the wind came out of the sails for the Sentinels.
“We finally had a game where our leader Ducatte had an off night shooting,” Newell said. “But Brenna is too talented a player not to have her finger print on the outcome of the game.
“Brenna created so many opportunities for her teammates. Her defense on Ticonderoga’s points guard changed the tempo of the game.”
Saranac was led by Maddie Gagnier with a double-double of 18 points and 10 rebounds. Brown added 12 points with multiple clutch offensive rebounds to give her team second chances.
Ti kept it close through the first three quarters with a scrappy defense, and quality shooting.
Sophia Dorsett led the Sentinels with nine points, which included banking a half court shot at the end of the first quarter.

WILLSBORO 14
CHAZY — Carly LaPierre tossed in 17 points to help lead the Eagles over the Warriors in MVAC play.
Audrey Langlois added 10 points and Sam Gonyo-Lafountain nine in the Chazy win.
“My girls are playing really great team basketball right now,” Chazy coach Josh Howell said. “We have such tremendous balance offensively and continue to play unselfish basketball.
“We committed only seven turnovers tonight. Just getting everyone involved raises the energy level on the court and on the bench. I’m proud of how we continue to play on defense. We had 32 steals tonight, led by Gonyo-Lafountain (10), (Emma) Howell (6) and Langlois (6).”
McKinley Belzile led the Warriors with six points.
“Shannon (Passno) is doing a great job with the Willsboro team,” Howell said. “She has a lot of passion for her program and it shows with the way her girls play. She has a young team with not a lot of experience, but you can see their improvement.”
