PEABODY — School Committee member Joseph Amico is running for an at-Large City Council seat this fall.
Amico, 53, has served on the School Committee since 2015. During that time, he has been the committee’s vice chair, sits on the finance and education subcommittees and is a member of the building committee for the city’s new public safety building going up on Allens Lane.
“I want to give more at a different level,” Amico said. “It’ll be a challenge, but I enjoy challenges. I want to learn more.”
Amico has been a history teacher at Susan B. Anthony Middle School in Revere since 2000. He also owns Amico Property Services LLC, and moved to Peabody in 2003.
He earned a bachelor’s degree in criminology at Suffolk University, a master’s in history at Salem State University and a Certificate of Advanced Graduate Study in leadership from the University of New England.
On the School Committee, Amico said he is proud to have supported mental health initiatives in the schools and “always working together to put students and teachers first.”
As a city councilor, Amico said he would focus on education, public safety and assisting small businesses downtown and throughout the city. He also aims to make Peabody an affordable place to live, especially for seniors and those on fixed incomes, and would be a councilor “who isn’t hard to find,” he said.
“I enjoy giving back to the city. I enjoy helping people at the end of the day,” Amico said. “There’s no real fame in this, or glory, you know? You help your neighbor like you would normally and if you can, you can help a lot of people. That’s what it’s about.”
Nomination papers are available from the City Clerk’s office at City Hall through July 11. Papers must be filed by July 15.
