PLATTSBURGH — The Saranac hockey team picked up two non-conference victories on the road over the weekend, rallying for a 7-6 overtime win over the Livingston Lakers on Friday and then a 4-2 decision over Churchville Chili on Saturday.
The Spartans (8-2-1) prepped for their showdown tonight at Plattsburgh’s State’s Stafford Ice Arena against defending Champlain Valley Athletic Conference and Section VII Division II champion Beekmantown.
“This coming week is a big one for us,” Saranac coach Robby Knowles said. “Beekmantown has been a thorn in our side for the past few seasons and we know they will come in with a good game plan.”
FRIDAY
SARANAC 7
LIVINGSTON 6, OT
GENESEO — Not often can you win a game by allowing five unanswered goals, but that’s what the Spartans did.
“Overall, we need to be better,” Knowles said. “I’m happy we were able to find a way to win, but we didn’t have good flow or pace for much of the game.”
Adrian Barnes led Saranac offensively with three goals, while Nolan Miner, Ryan Campbell, Gabe Moore and Ashtyn Catlin added one each. Landon Giroux picked up four assists.
The Spartans led 4-1 in the second period before the Lakers, a combined team of high schools in the Geneseo area, scored three goals in the second to tie it and had two more in the third to take a 6-4 lead.
Campbell tallied a big short-handed goal to bring the Spartans to within 6-5 at 9:08 of the third and then Moore forced overtime late in the contest, at 15:46. That set the stage for Catlin’s power-play goal at 2:18 of overtime that won it.
Joe Cinquino accounted for four goals and an assist for the Lakers.
“Our defensive zone coverage was pretty poor in this game,” Knowles said. “Cinquino is a highly-skilled player and we didn’t do a good job of gapping up on him or matching his speed in zone.
“Adrian Barnes had an excellent night for us. All three of his goals came from in front, jamming away in the dirty area.”
SATURDAY

CHURCHVILLE CHILI 2
SCOTTSVILLE — Campbell scored two goals while Moore and Deacon Giroux added one each in the Spartans’ win. For Giroux, it was his first varsity goal.
Brody Macomber, who recorded two assists on Friday, added two assists in the win for Saranac, which trailed 1-0 after one but took a 3-2 advantage after two.
Shawn McLane was strong in the Saranac nets, stopping 35 of 37 shots, to get the victory.
“We played really well in the first period,” Knowles said. “We had 20 shots and couldn’t solve their goaltender.
“We spent a lot of time in our zone in the second period, but created some better chances and capitalized on our opportunities.
“I thought we played well with the lead in the third. They were a volume shooting team and McLane was great in the net for us.”

Bailey Barnett stopped 20 of 21 shots in the Beekmantown net.
“We played a very strong game defensively against a very skilled Burlington/Colchester team,” Beekmantown coach Al Ruest said. “Freshman Brooke Bilow stepped up and had an outstanding game along with senior Adyson Campbell in that defensive pairing.
“The Rhianna Gilligan and Kylee Surprenant pairing was also solid defensively. Bailey Barnett made some key saves late in the game to help secure the victory.”
