PLATTSBURGH — Nolan Miner scored two goals and assisted on another Wednesday night to help give Saranac a 6-4 victory over Plattsburgh High in Champlain Valley Athletic Conference hockey.
The contest was part of Frozen Hope: Slapshots and Puck Drops, in memory of Aimee McLane, the mother of Saranac goalie Shawn McLane.
“The first thing we want to do is thank the entire community for their support of the McLane family,” Saranac coach Robby Knowles said. “Aimee made a tremendous impact on the lives of many Plattsburgh City School District students, so we made sure to circle this game on the schedule to have the event.
“We raised over $6,500 for the event at the Ameri-Can North Sports Center, which will be going into a memorial scholarship fund.”
The Spartans (3-3-1, 1-1) held a 2-0 lead after one period, with Declan Baker and Landen Duprey scoring late in the stanza.
Goals by Landon Giroux and Gabe Moore gave Saranac a 4-0 advantage in the second before Chase Laravia put the Hornets on the scoreboard midway through the period.
Cooper Holland brought PHS to within 4-2 early in the third before Miner tallied goals less than two minutes apart to put the Spartans back by four, 6-2.
But Dylan Pachter and Braeden Calkins scored to cut the Hornets’ deficit back to two and make it interesting down the stretch.
“It was an emotional night for our team and it showed at different points of the game,” Knowles said.
“I thought we came out and played well in the first period, but we were very inconsistent in the second and third periods.”
McLane stopped 20 of 24 shots in the Saranac nets to get the win and also added an assist. Owen Chapple turned away 40 of 46 shots for PHS.
It was a cleanly-played game, with only one penalty called on each team.
“I give Plattsburgh credit — we let them hang around in the game and they took advantage of their opportunities,” Knowles said.
“Congratulations to Cooper Holland, Declan Baker and Gabe Moore for scoring their first high school goals in the game.
“And thanks to Coach (Joe) Tolosky and the entire Plattsburgh Hornets hockey community for their support with this game.”
