SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. — Jackson Coryer deflected in Landon Giroux’s shot at 9:06 of the third period Wednesday night to give Saranac a 2-all overtime tie with Rice Memorial, Vt. in non-league hockey.
“This was another really good test for us,” Saranac coach Robby Knowles said. “There haven’t been any layups on our schedule, so I think we are getting a lot out of playing a tough non-league schedule.”
Rice grabbed the lead on Ollie Mobley’s goal with 13:22 gone in the first period.
“We had the territorial edge in the first period and outshot them, 12-5,” Knowles said. “But we didn’t do a good job when we were in our defensive zone.
“They scored their first goal because we turned the puck over and spent the next 45 seconds in our zone, fanning on a couple of clearing attempts.”
Adrian Barnes pulled the Spartans (2-2-1) even with an unassisted goal at 8:46 of the second stanza before Oliver Quong’s power-play goal at 12:40 put Rice back on top, 2-1.
Coryer then forced overtime on his goal with 5:54 remaining in regulation, with Giroux and Ryan Campbell assisting.
“We did a better job in the second and third periods, but need better puck management at center ice,” Knowles said.
Shawn McLane finished with 29 saves in the Saranac nets and Giles Heilman had 28 stops for Rice.
“McLane was solid in net for us all game,” Knowles said.
“Our team defense has been pretty good so far, which will be important next week against a Beekmantown group that filled our net last season.”
