SARANAC — It took a couple of innings, but Saranac woke up.
The Spartans rallied with a six-run fifth inning to defeat the Nighthawks, 8-5, Saturday.
It was a pitcher’s duel for a majority of the game as Peru’s Irelynn Bateman struck out 11 over six innings and Saranac’s Gracie Baxter sat down seven.
Despite this, both teams got bat-on-ball with the Nighthawks having a 13-11 advantage.
Peru’s Sierra Geppner was the only player with an extra base hit with double.
“Peru started out well playing good defense and hitting the ball, but I think the second game of the day took a toll on them,” Saranac head coach Sam Campbell said. “Bateman pitched really well and will be hard to beat. We were much better mentally today and began to hit the ball well and run the bases. We were more focused and got great pitching from Gracie Baxter and catching from first-year player Emma Duquette. We also had some timely hitting.”

PERU 18
PLATTSBURGH 15 (8)
PLATTSBURGH — The second game happened in Plattsburgh, and Peru needed extra innings to defeat the Hornets, 18-15.
At one point, PHS held a 10-4 lead, but the Nighthawks would go on a 14-5 run in the fifth inning to rally and win the game.
It was smallball that Peru took advantage of, drawing walks, stealing bases and advancing on passed balls, that allowed them to counter Plattsburgh.
PHS’ Marlie Walker finished with four hits, including a home run and double, to lead her team. Sadie Guerin and Olivia Lathrop added two hits each.
Peru’s Emma Miles had a double as teammate Amelia Siskavich finished with two hits.

PLATTSBURGH 7
PLATTSBURGH — Crown Point hit the road and grabbed a 17-7 win over PHS on Friday.
Kaitlin Ross was solid from the circle with seven strikeouts while scattering eight hits. She didn’t let the Hornets get comfortable until late when PHS tried to rally in the seventh.
By then, the game was comfortably out of reach and the Panthers took the non-conference win.
Plattsburgh’s Kiley Kretser had the only extra base hit as she lined a triple.
“Crown Point had solid pitching and great defense behind them,” Hornet co-head coach Jenny Walker said. “PHS started to rally at the end, but it wasn’t enough to catch Crown Point. Kiley Kretser for PHS did a great job behind the plate.”
