QUEENSBURY — It was a day to remember for the Saranac Spartans.
At the NYSPHSAA Cross Country State Championships, the Saranac girls reached the podium just points behind eventual state champion Bronxville, which scored 77 points. The Spartans were just off the pace with 86 points.
They were led by Sienna Boulds’ highest finish ever at seventh place with a time of 18:53.
Seventh grader Addalyn Coryer was next in 31st with a time of 19:55. They were followed by senior Nora Mesc, 43rd in 20:12; senior Laura Denial 20:18; eighth grader Julia Ryan, 58th in 20:38; eighth grader Alexis LaClair, 71st in 21:07; and sophomore Molly Thayer, 99th in 22:15.
The top 20 individuals and top two teams earned places on the podium.
Peru’s Maddy Welc placed 17th with a time of 19:17.
Other members of Class C who represented Section VII as individuals were Saranac Lake’s Nora Daley, 30th in 19:51; Plattsburgh High’s Abigail McLean, 34th in 20:02; and fellow Red Storm runners Asa Bruno, 46th in 20:20, and Cadence Kennedy, 79th in 21:19.
On the boys’ side of Class C, Saranac was just off the podium with a third place finish at 114 points. Irvington, 98 points, and East Aurora, 30 points, made the podium at second and first, respectively.
Senior Sean Dormann led the Spartans and was just off the podium in 21st place with a time of 16:34. He was followed by teammates Noah Thayer, 60th in 17:26; Owen Dingman, 71st in 17:37; Evan Barnes, 76th in 17:42; Andrew Carter, 77th in 17:45; Austin Lareau, 84th in 18:03; and Adrian Barnes, 98th in 18:26.
Also competing in Class C as individuals were AuSable Valley’s Reece Long, 23rd in 16:41, and Jayden Campagna, 33rd in 18:56. Peru’s Brennan Peters, 42nd in 17:10, was followed by Saranac Lake’s Emmett VanBuskirk, 51st in 17:18, and Peru’s Michael Welc, 65th in 17:31.
In Class B, the Beekmantown Girls competed in the first race of the day. The Eagles finished 8th in the team scoring with 207 points. John Jay Cross River took the win with 46 points.
Seventh grader Jordanne Minchoff once again led the Eagles at 53rd in a time of 19:52. She was followed by Olivia Drowne, 72nd in 20:19; Bristol Provost, 81st in 20:32; Emily Marro, 95th in 20:58; Addison Cartier, 105th in 21:28; Ryleigh Baker, 107th in 21:30); and Zilpha Irland, 108th in 21:38.
On the boys’ side, the Beekmantown boys competed in the Class B race, finishing 9th with 213 points. Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake was the overall winner with 66 points.
Junior Nolan Laidman was just off the medal stand in 21st place. His time of 16:05 was the fastest of Section VII for the day. He was followed by Christopher Lincourt, 81st in 17:23; Hayden Miller-Whipple, 87th in 17:32; Loghan Strickland, 92nd in 17:39; Patrick Rabideau, 103rd in 17:58; Noah Trombly, 105th in 18:02; and Escher Hoffman, 107th in 18:04.
In the Girls Class D race, Lake Placid finished 8th with 160 points. Tri-Valley won with a total of 62 points.
Eighth grader Leila Fey led the Blue Bombers to medal in 8th place overall in 18:49, the fastest Section VII girl of the day. Her teammate and fellow eighth grader, Norah Francis also medaled in 15th with a time of 19:51. Rounding out the scoring were Ruth Mahaney, 82nd in 23:09; Holly Erenstone 84th in 23:17; and Rose Wenzler 109th in 25:57.
Competing individually were Moriah/Boquet Valley’s Nataniela Medina, 96th in 24:19; Gianna Cappiello of Seton Catholic, 99th in 24:30; Ti’s Aubrey Hayes, 100th in 24:31; and M/BV’s Karissa Costello, 112th in 26:25.
For the boys, Lake Placid’s Graham Scull, 65th in 17:59; Doug Guglielmi, 67th in 18:04; Jim Guglielmi, 71st in 18:14; Jesse Carlson, 109th in 19:40.
