PLATTSBURGH — While the season is only two weeks old, the CVAC Indoor Track and Field season concluded 2023 in an action packed meet.
Saranac showed off in the meet, by winning both the girls and boys team competition in convincing fashion.
But even with the convincing victories, the highlight for the Spartans comes from one of their own, Grace Damiani.
Damiani won the high jump, tying her own Section VII record of 5’4”. This currently ranks second in the state, across all levels. The current high mark is 5’5” set by Zoie Tesi of Gloversville.
BOYS
Saranac took home the boys victory with a 10 point victory over second place Peru. The Spartan’s 160 points almost doubled the third place team.
The day was almost taken by the Nighthawks with 150 points as they won six events, including all the sprints and relays.
Peru’s Sawyer Schlitt again ran away from the competition in the 55m, 300m, and 4×400.
In fact the 300m was a Nighthawk sweep as Blake Porter and Ryan Squire rounded out the top three.
Porter got his second win of the day as he was part of the 4×200 team with Schlitt, Mat McMillan and Preston Daniels.
Squire earned two victories as he was part of the 4×400, with Owen Fuller, Alex Watts and Owen Tedesco, and the 4×800, with Watts, Brennan Peters and Michael Welc.
Oliver Lancto brought home another Nighthawk victory as he placed first in the high jump at 6’2”.
Saranac’s Zander Daniels recorded two victories on the day as he won both the 55m hurdles and the long jump. Teammate Andrew Denial took home first in the 1000.
Beekmantown’s lone victory came from Nolan Laidman who outpaced everyone in the 3200.
Garrett Beebe of Ticonderoga walked out with two wins as he placed first in the 600 and 1600.
Saranac Lake’s Liam Nobles came in third in the long jump, but won the triple with a massive distance of 42’6, three inches further than second place.
Gavin Bobbie of Seton Catholic, won both the shot put and weight throws.
GIRLS
Just like the boys team, the Spartans won by double digits over Beekmantown, 156-142.
In fact, nine of the 15 events were won by Saranac. This included all the relays, with strong showings in the jumps.
In the 4×200, the combination of Madalyn Wynnik, Katilynn Rbideau, Eve Liberty and Sarah Lavigne took home the win with 1:54.82.
Lavigne, Liberty and Rabideau were also part of the 4×400 win along with Hannah Hamel.
In fact the Saranac ‘B’ time of Gillian Miner, Elizabeth Wynnik, Kali Norcross and Molly Thayer came in second at 4:45.77.
Elizabeth Wynnik and Miner were on the 4×800 team with Laura Denial and Sienna Boulds to claim first.
Along with Damiani’s win in the high jump, Madalyn Wynnik took home the long jump at 15’3.5”.
Hannah Hamel claimed the 600 win with teammate Laura Denial winning the 1000 and 1500
Saranac also won the weight throw when Macey Heuer threw for 34’1”, four feet further than second place.
Beekmantown walked away with four victories as it started with Ava McAuliffe taking home first in the 300m dash at 42.14.
Olivia Drowne walked away with the victory in the 3000, while Lexi Clark took first in the triple jump.
Fellow Eagle Kylie Bishop claimed first in the shot put, with a distance of 32’6”, five feet further than second place’s Isabella Giovazzino of Moriah/Boquet Valley.
Ticonderoga’s Isabelle Burroughs continues to show dominance in the hurdles, as she took home first in the 55m hurdles at 9.96, .04 of a second faster than Lexi Clark of Beekmantown.
Plattsburgh’s lone victory came by the legs of Winisha Michael-Steele, who sprinted to a first place finish in the 55m at 7.44. Less than half a second separated first through sixth.
With the meet completed, the indoor season is on hold until the new year. They reconvene at the Plattsburgh State Field House, Jan. 13 at 9 a.m.
