SARANAC — Saranac wrestling coach Heath Smith said “it was either pin or get pinned” Wednesday night,
The defending champion Spartans opened the Champlain Valley Athletic Conference regular season by rallying for a high-scoring 42-35 victory over Beekmantown.
There were 13 matches and 12 of them were decided by pins, with both the Spartans and Eagles recording six each. The only other match that wasn’t by pin was a forfeit at 101 pounds.
“It was a very close match between Saranac and Beekmantown tonight,” Smith said.
The competition started at 131 and Beekmantown won six of seven matches at one point, forcing Saranac to win the last five to overtake the Eagles.
Gavin Morrow (131), Branigan Boulds (152), Dylan Cogswell (285), Colby Roesler (108), Teegan Smith (116) and Owen Stiles (124) won by fall for the Spartans, with Roesler, Smith and Stiles winning the final three matches of the evening.
Jacob Lagree (138), Jacob Magiera (145), Sawyer Bell (160), Lucas Corrado (170), Jack Brown (190) and Alexander Hall (215) were the Eagles who pinned their opponents.
“One of the most exciting and pivotal matches of the evening was a 152 with Branigan Boulds against Corbin Willette,” Smith said. “Corbin had Branigan on his back in the first period, but Branigan fought off and returned the favor with a pin in the second period at 2:29.
“Our young wrestlers pulled through again, with Colby Roesler, Teegan Smith and Owen Stiles getting pins to finish the match.”
