NORTH ANDOVER — The Eagle-Tribune’s annual Santa Fund helped spread holiday cheer to 230 local children and their families with funds raised by generous donors in its 100th year of giving.
As of Jan. 10, more than $63,000 was raised through generous contributions from the community and local businesses and organizations.
The Santa Fund is in partnership with the Merrimack Valley YMCA, which have been involved with the charity since 2020. Since 1924, the local tradition has provided children and families in need with gifts and food during the holidays.
“What makes the Santa Fund so special is the direct and immediate impact we have to make sure every family has a memorable holiday,” Merrimack Valley YMCA president and CEO Francis Kenneally III said.
Money raised went to ensuring each child received a few gifts and new clothing this holiday season. Families also received a Market Basket gift card. Funds helped families with holiday meal starters or a complete feast.
The Merrimack Valley YMCA staff and volunteers shopped with the children’s wish lists in hand to buy items like a Nintendo switch console and games to fulfill one child’s gift requests. Other sought-after gifts included scooters, skateboards and inline skates, along with safety gear to enjoy them.
One boy who wanted to play basketball was given a family membership to the YMCA. Necessary items like a baby high chair, winter boots and gloves for both children and parents were also given to many families.
“I feel such Christmas spirit in organizing and thinking about the gifts that are being packed up,” lead volunteer coordinator Tish Bachman, a Methuen resident, said. “Those receiving the gifts are grateful, warm and loving families.”
Volunteers of all ages spent a total of 154 hours during December wrapping and sorting 1,150 gifts.
“Our volunteers and staff not only wrap gifts, they truly are Santa’s elves making children’s wishes come true,” Kenneally said. “They will track down a specific gift to meet every wish list and make sure every child feels special.”
One family sent a note to Merrimack Valley YMCA detailing what the Santa Fund meant for them.
“You have helped me these past years keep the Christmas spirit alive in my home,” the note read. “I can’t thank you enough for the joy you bring every holiday season.”
