For the first time in Salem youth cheerleading history, the U8 cheer squad is headed to Nationals.
It’s been a well deserved run for the young athletes, who began their journey to the top with a victory at the NCYFC Invitational earlier this year. The girls followed that up with a second place finish at the NCYFC Local tournament, a first place finish in the state championships, and most recently, a runner-up finish at New England Regionals.
Salem’s talented squad now moves on to compete in the National championship at Silver Spurs Arena in Kissimmee, FL beginning at 3 p.m. on Friday. The Witches’ group will go toe-to-toe against 17 other programs from across the country with hopes of earning a spot in the top five to compete for the title on ‘Super Sunday’ this weekend.
Members of this year’s team include Analia Alessi, Mia Brackett, Lucy Brennan, Rosalie Caldeira, Leyla Carrillo, Winifred Dion, Analiese Garcia, Azalea Gonzalez, Emmalise Gonzalez, Vivi Suriel Gonzalez, Amelia Todd, Julenny Vasquez and Kaylani Freeman. The squad is coached by Amareliz Medrano, assisted by Kayla Lugo and Bianca Louf. Student demonstrators Lily Muzarol and Nayelis DeJesus have also contributed to the team.
At this time, the girls are continuing to accept donations to offset travel costs for families. Those looking to help out can Venmo @salemyouthfootballandcheer or visit their Gofundme page Salem U8 Cheerleading.
