Salem firefighters make quick work of condo fire
SALEM — Firefighters, already out on a nearby training exercise, made quick work Monday afternoon of a condominium fire.
The first of several telephone alarms came at about 3:45 p.m. for a smoky fire at 58 Weatherly Drive, according to Deputy Scott Austin.
When the first firefighters arrived, some two to three minutes later, they found heavy smoke pouring out of a hallway in the lower-level condo of a six-unit building.
They followed the smoke to a closet in which the fire was centered. They were able to quickly extinguish the fire, itself, limiting fire damage primarily to the immediate vicinity.
Otherwise, there was varying smoke damage throughout the building, and some electrical damage in and around the closet.
Firefighters were able to clear the scene by 6 p.m.
Austin couldn’t provide the number of residents living in the six units, but all those except for residents from the damaged unit, were expected to need to find lodging elsewhere at least through Wednesday night.
Neither residents nor firefighters were hurt.
He also said the cause of the fire remains under investigation, but, so far, there appears to be no reason for suspicion.
