ROCKPORT — Through the efforts recently made by the Rockport Rotary Club, students in Uganda will have a leg up to learn.
During the past year, the club has funded the construction of a new classroom, part of the Village2Village Project’s Education Center.
The classroom, which has the capacity to hold 90 students, was built by local Ugandan builders using local materials.
“The Rockport Rotary Club is again happy to support the Village2Village Project,” Rotary Club President Matt Wigton said. “We have enjoyed working with this organization for several years.”
Wigton said the new classroom will be an asset in a country where only 25% of children who begin primary school advance to secondary education.
“This grant ties in with the mission of Rotary and one of our key areas of focus, which is education,” Wigton said.
The classroom will provide the students with paper and pencils and a wide variety of books.
The mission of the Village2Village Project is to provide comprehensive, empowering, respectful and compassionate care for vulnerable children and their families.
The project provides basic needs support and education to more than 225 children, including many who have lost one more parent due to HIV/AIDs or violence.
The Rockport Rotary Club has partnered with Village2Village Project to a dig a well in an area without clean water and construct kitchen and dining facilities at both of Village2Village Project’s campuses.
