ROCKPORT — A 25-year veteran of the Rockport Fire Department has died.
Rockport Fire Capt. Andrew Porter died unexpectedly Monday at Addison Gilbert Hospital in Gloucester, surrounded by loved ones, according to Fire Chief Mark Wonson and Town Administrator Mitchell Vieira.
Porter most recently served as the captain of Engine Companies 1 and 3. He was also a specialist in the Rockport Department of Public Works Highway Division.
“We are heartbroken and mourning the loss of Capt. Andrew Porter — a dedicated firefighter, trusted leader and beloved member of our Rockport Fire Department family,” Wonson said in a prepared statement. “His passing leaves a deep void in our hearts and our community, and we’ll carry his memory with us every day.”
Porter was 43 years old and is survived by his wife, two daughters, parents and sister. He followed his father into the profession; John “Jack” Porter retired as assistant chief, having served 40 years.
“Our hearts are with Capt. Porter’s family and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time,” Vieira said. “His service to Rockport reflected the very best of this community, and we all deeply feel his loss.”
Arrangements will be announced as they become available.
