WALTON — A Music on the Delaware main stage concert is bringing the enchantment of the swing era with Dan Gabel and his orchestra, featuring vocalist Kimberly Hawkey, 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 15 at the Walton Theatre.
Hawkey returns to the Walton Theatre stage to pay tribute to the legendary voices of Helen Forrest, Doris Day, Ella Fitzgerald and more. Her vocals, combined with the orchestra’s harmonies, create a truly magical experience, according to a news release.
“Kimberly’s voice is a time machine,” the release stated. “Jazz, Broadway, folk — she effortlessly blends genres, transporting audiences to worlds of beauty with each crystalline note. Carrying the torch of timeless Big Band magic, Kimberly’s velvety voice has soared alongside some of the greatest names in vintage jazz.”
In 2021, she made her debut with the Glenn Miller Orchestra, where she met New England trombonist, arranger and bandleader Dan Gabel. Their collaboration, backed by Gabel’s powerhouse Abletones Big Band, blossomed into the Christmas album, “Snowed In!”
“Gabel’s orchestra, renowned for its rich, authentic sound, will transport you to a bygone era in a breathtaking performance featuring an all-star ensemble of musicians,” the release stated.
Hailed by the Boston Globe as “the real deal, (a bandleader) that looks and sounds like the 1940s” and by the Syncopated Times as “the champion of Big Bands and vintage jazz,” Gabel is a trombonist, arranger, bandleader, historian and educator. His Big Band, Dan Gabel and The Abletones, has played throughout the United States and is featured on numerous recordings and video/television programs.
There will be a brief intermission and a 50-50 raffle drawing.
Tickets are $25 for adults, $20 for seniors, $40 for a family (two adults and their children) and can be purchased online or in-person at the Walton Theatre, Molto Molto and Wayne Bank in Walton or The Green Toad Bookstore in Oneonta.
The concert also will be live streamed on the Music on the Delaware website, www.musiconthedelaware.org. Livestream tickets are $15, must be purchased day before show.
