The State Department of Transportation is set to start work this week on its S. Transit Road rehabilitation project in Lockport.
The $8.92 million, 4.5-mile project will cover S. Transit Road from the Lockport south cty line to the Niagara County Line. Work will include a complete milling and resurfacing of the road, installing new pavement markings, replacing corridor signs, and repairing and replacing drainage structures.
For pedestrians, the sidewalk in front of Lockport’s Children’s Memorial Park between Lincoln Avenue and Lincoln Drive would be reconstructed, with a new ADA-compliant curb ramp.
The culvert replacements and milling and paving work will happen during the night, with two-way traffic to be maintained at all times. Work is expected to be finished by the end of the year.
It’s part of $30 million in highway and bridge construction work Gov. Kathy Hochul and the DOT announced would start over the weekend, with other work including bridge replacements in Franklin County and I-81 Resurfacing in Onondaga County.
“These improvements to critical roadways in Upstate New York will enhance safety for both pedestrians and motorists, improve travel conditions, and bring the infrastructure up to modern standards in these three counties,” said DOT Commissioner Marie Therese Dominguez.
A separate $4.35 million highway rehabilitation project on Transit Road and State Route 31 in Lockport will start later this year and be finished in 2027.
On Wednesday, DOT officials will host a public information session about a proposed pavement and safety improvement project on Robinson Road from Lockport Bypass to Raymond Road, along with the intersection of Lockport Bypass and State Street. It will take place from 4 to 6 p.m. at Lockport Town Hall.
The open house-style meeting will feature information about the project construction and timeline, with opportunities to talk to DOT representatives.
Proposed work would create a new two-way center turn lane on Robinson Road from Lockport Bypass to Raymond Road, with additional turning lanes at the intersections of Robinson Road and South Transit Road and Robinson Road and Beattie Avenue. There would also be a modified trail crossing and a new signal at the Lockport Bypass and State Street intersection.
Construction is expected to start in spring 2027 and be completed in 2028. Two-way traffic would be maintained during construction with no detours.
