Renovations to the Oneonta town pool are expected to be completed soon, allowing the summer swim season to start by late June, town officials said.
An opening celebration event is expected to be held in late July.
The town pool has been undergoing renovations since last year, according to Daily Star archives. The pool is free to use, and the town offers free swim lessons with priority given to town residents.
“Inspections with the (Otsego County) Department of Health are going to be next week,” Oneonta Town Board member Joe Camarata said at the Wednesday, June 10 board meeting.
After those certifications are complete, the pool will be ready to open.
“We should know within the next week,” Camarata said.
Camarata added that there would be new safety signs, door handles and new toilets. He said the toilets had cracked during the winter because “winterization wasn’t done correctly.”
The pool itself was being cleaned by a vacuum system, Camarata said.
“The pump’s running, the water’s really clear,” he said.
Camarata said in April that the town contracted with 21st Century Pools and Spa in Vestal for the project. One of the biggest pieces was reconstruction of the 1970s-era pool to include a protective concrete membrane.
Town Supervisor Will Rivera said Thursday, June 11 that the pool will reopen on June 24 or 26. The town will “hopefully have a more solidified date” after the DOH inspection, he said.
“Right now we are also having the floors in the bathhouse being redone,” he added. “It’s being grinded down to basically put down a new cement commercialized, non-slip flooring.”
He said he expects the grand reopening celebration and ribbon-cutting ceremony for the pool to take place July 24.
“We can just have a cool community event for all,” he said.
