Eileen and Steve Norman, grandparents to a Monroe Elementary student, were among those who got a chance to see firsthand the improvements made to district buildings thanks to a 2023 bonding referendum.
They joined other members of the public who attended open houses at schools across the district, including Monroe, Bridges Community School and Dakota Meadows Middle School.
Among the features Monroe Principal Mollie Meyer showed the pair were the several 1 inch-thick bullet resistant glass panels and a secure entrance that funnels guests into the school office, not directly into the school, as was the case prior to improvements.
Meyer said that staff at the building have welcomed the safety improvements.
“It is always top of mind for every staff employee to have in mind the safety of staff and students,” Meyer said.
In 2023, school district residents approved $105 million in facility improvements across the school district. In addition to safety improvements, the funds have also gone toward building expansions, HVAC improvements and other measures.
Tours will continue Nov. 24 at Jefferson Elementary School and Roosevelt Elementary School and Nov. 25 at Franklin Elementary School and Washington Elementary School from 5-6 p.m.
Projects under the bonding referendum will continue over the next two years.
