TRAVERSE CITY — An 108-acre prescribed burn is planned for 11 a.m. today, Monday in Grand Traverse County’s Fife Lake Township.
The burn is intended to reduce woody understory (small trees, shrubs and plants that grow beneath the forest canopy) and stimulate fire-dependent plants, according to a Michigan Department of Natural Resources statement.
Burns are conducted by DNR personnel in designated state-managed areas during appropriate weather conditions and in cooperation with the proper authorities and local units of government.
Burns may be canceled at the last minute because of weather and wind conditions to preserve public safety, the statement said.
