TRAVERSE CITY — What’s better than one day of bowling? Well, two days of bowling, of course.
The Great Northwest High School Bowling Conference held meets on back-to-back days, making up for the snowed-out Jan. 13 meet on Friday and bowling a regularly scheduled meet Saturday.
The Traverse City West girls team checked off their first of three goals for the season as the Titans won their 14th consecutive Division 1-2 GNHSBC championship with wins over rival Traverse City Central on both days of competition.
West toppled Central with a 30-0 shutout victory and a dominating 26-4 win to secure the conference crown. The Titans’ three-headed bowling monster led the way as Taylor Phillips rolled high games of 235, 200 and 181 followed by Alyssa Tanner with high games of 214, 193, 187 and 179, and Jordan LaFleur with a consistent performance that featured high games of 200, 199 and two 196s.
The Titans next eye regional gold and the state finals championship in the coming weeks.
“The girls are feeling good, but they haven’t celebrated as much as they have in the past because they’re so focused on regionals and getting ready to prepare for that,” West head coach Aaron Phillips said.
The Titans head to Bay City on Sunday for a tournament and then Muskegon for a regional tuneup. Coach Phillips said his team feels confident and is in a good spot as the postseason approaches.
“There’s no big sways. There’s been a lot of great consistency in those three girls,” Coach Phillips said. “And our two new girls are getting better every week, so we’re definitely looking pretty strong.”
Other results from girls action on the lanes included Traverse City Christian picking up wins over Mancelona (29-1) and Bellaire (30-0) as well as Mancelona rebounding with a 27-3 victory over Cadillac. The Sabres had high-game performances from Rebekah Burch with a 198, Gwen Oliver with a 185, and Naomi Elenbaas with a 184 and 178.
On the boys side, TC West and TC Central will square off next week to decide the conference championship, which will be Saturday at Lucky Jack’s for the final regular-season meet. The conference tournament is set for Feb. 16-17 with regionals to follow Feb. 22-24.
