THOMPSONVILLE — Traverse City West kicked off the season with a monster two-day TC Central Tee-off tournament win Friday and Saturday at Crystal Mountain.
The Titans outlasted Marquette and Rockford to claim the team championship with a six-person, two-day score of 618 (+26).
“All six guys contribute in a different form, which makes it more meaningful,” Traverse City West coach Todd Hursey said. “We pressed our guys to be great today, and we had a day when we had to fight to be good … Definitely hungry to be better than we were today.”
This is Traverse City West’s first win at this tournament in program history since its inception around 1987.
The weather was ideal for a mid-April northern Michigan tournament.
The Traverse City West brothers, senior Winslow and sophomore Duncan Robinson, carried the Titans throughout day one. TC West’s depth was pivotal on day two, as Henry Stachnik, Sean Haggerty, Nathan Schaub and Jason Parrish added to the charge.
“It feels great to win. A lot of guys contributed,” Winslow Robinson said. “We showed our depth today and that we can count on each other … It’s encouraging for the rest of the season. We can take away that we can compete with some really good teams. There was a lot of good competition … We don’t have to play perfect in order to compete with top players and top teams.”
Winslow Robinson finished tied for 11th, shooting a 153 (+8).
Parrish was clutch when the match was the tightest on Saturday when he birdied three of his last four holes to solidify the win for the Titans. He finished 24th overall, shooting a 159 (+7).
Winslow’s brother, Duncan Robinson, scored the second lowest (T14, 154, +8).
“It feels great after not having a great second round coming in and realizing that we were going to pull through at the end,” Duncan said. “It definitely lifted my spirits, and I was proud of everybody on our team. This gives our team a lot of confidence that we can win … We’ve got a deep team, and that will help us later in the year.”
Stachnick and Haggerty both finished tied for 27th in the impressive outing.
After TC West, the top 10 is as follows: Marquette, Rockford, Grand Blanc, East Grand Rapids, Grand Rapids South Christian, Midland Dow, South Christian’s second team, Traverse City Central and Grand Rapids Forest Hills Central.
Glen Lake senior Michael Houtteman shot a second-place finishing score of 144 (-1), one stroke behind JP Levan of East Grand Rapids.
