TAYLOR — Traverse City Christian boys bowling finished the regular season at the Division 3 state championships at Skore Lanes in Taylor, Friday and Saturday.
Sabre junior Josh Millward earned a spot in bracket play as the No. 7 seed.
“I feel like the team did really well, and I feel very proud of myself,” Millward said. “What I’m taking away from this season is to focus on one frame at a time.”
Millward had a six-game Baker score of 1,251 pins and averaged 208 per game.
Traverse City Christian coach Brent Wheat said the Sabres turned their season around nearly three weeks ago, once tournament play started.
“We didn’t have the regular season that our team was hoping for. We didn’t win the conference overall title,” Wheat said. “But something clicked with the team going into the conference tournament.”
Glen Lake won the Lake Michigan High School bowling regular-season conference before the Sabres earned the tournament championship.
The Sabres traveled to Alpena for regionals and came away with the team championship, advancing to states for the second time in program history.
“Going into states, I told the kids we are playing with house money, and with no real expectations, just do your best,” Wheat said. “Try your hardest, and we’ll be successful.”
Traverse City Christian lost to Jonesville in the first round of bracket play, as the Oilers avenged a 2023 state finals loss.
Glen Lake seniors Tanner Crick and Reilly Konner performed well in the Division 4 tournament.
Crick finished 26th overall with a total score of 1,111. Kinnee finished 44th for the Lakers.
Makai Wyatt of Elk Rapids made the cut in 16th place before falling in the first round to the No. 1 seed from Crowell-Lexington in Division 3. Zach Caldwell finished 29th for the Elks.
Traverse City West sophomore Chyenne Kniss was the lone Triton girl to advance to the Division 1 state finals that take place Sunday and Monday at Thunderbowl Lanes in Allen Park.
