GRAND RAPIDS — Traverse City Central boys soccer started the season off strong with a 6-4 win over Grand Rapids Forest Hills Northern.
The win was without one of their own, as Wilder William Seeburger, a Traverse City Central sophomore last fall, tragically passed away in a car crash Sunday in a head-on collision.
Collin Rademacher produced four goals and an assist, Zander Folgmann had a goal and two assists, while Nathan Stawski scored a goal and Will Richmond notched an assist. Brendan Schlosser made four saves and Bennett Marsh two.
Forest Hills Northern beat Central 2-1 last year in an early-season game in Traverse City.
The Trojans host Oxford at Coast Guard Fields in Traverse City Saturday.
BOYS SOCCER
Gaylord defeats Lakers to start season
Gaylord won in a 2-1 road thriller over Glen Lake Wednesday to start the season on the right foot.
The first 10 minutes were back-and-forth, with both teams nearly scoring multiple times as the Lakers and Blue Devils shook off the nerves during the first game of the season.
Gaylord soccer coach Brandon Contreras knew something had to change at halftime, with the game tied 0-0.
“It doesn’t matter how many opportunities we create. Now we have to come back … that’s what happened. The boys dug deep. We had some players move around with some different spots, and they didn’t quit, and they ended up coming away with the win, so I was really proud of them,” Contreras said.
The Lakers (0–1) went up 1-0 off a Sawyer Homa goal from Austin Switzer in the second half.
After a Gaylord tie, the Blue Devils found the back of the net in the final three minutes.
Gaylord freshman Joey Wieczorek scored his varsity goal off a rebound to tie the game 1-1. Wieczorek was not done as he came away from a scramble first later in the second half to find the back of the net and earn the first win of the season.
“This is a good confidence booster. We have a pretty young squad. The majority of our squad is first-year students this year. We graduated a pretty big class last year, and we really needed a solid win to build some confidence and make some of these younger guys realize that,” Contreras said.
Glen Lake senior goalie Anthony Forton had 17 saves.
Gaylord heads to Tawas Saturday, and the Lakers travel to Hart Aug. 27 at 5 p.m.
