MANKATO — The road to state began for many area boy’s basketball teams Tuesday. Here’s what went down.
Class A: Section 2
Madelia 98 United South Central 50
Dalton Tatro led the Blackhawks with 33 points and added seven rebounds. Kaydon Firchau racked up 27 points, seven rebounds, six assists, six steals and two blocks. Bryce Borkenhagen dished out 13 assists and scored seven points. Caden McMullen added 10 rebounds and nine points.
Madelia faces Gibbons-Fairfax-Winthrop at 6 p.m. Thursday at Sibley East.
Nicollet 84 NRHEG 69
Henry Kennedy earned a double-double with 22 points and 11 rebounds to go with five assists in the win. Carson Kettner also earned a double-double, hauling in 17 points and 10 rebounds while dishing seven assists. Keegan Hulke added 11 points, five rebounds and five assists.
Nicollet faces Mayer Lutheran at 7:45 p.m. Thursday at St. Peter high school.
Cleveland 73 Sleepy Eye Saint Mary’s 61
Carson Lyons led the Clippers with 21 points. Braeden Smith totaled 20 points. Alex Kortuem dropped 12 points.
The Clippers will face Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton, which defeated Truman/Martin Luther/GHEC 78-59, at 6 p.m. Thursday at St. Peter High School.
Class AA: Section 2
St. Clair 59 Minnesota Valley Lutheran 57 OT
Hunter Winkler led the Cyclones with 18 points while adding six rebounds and five steals. Sam Freitag added 16 points and six rebounds. Austin Ward added 12 points and four assists.
Blake Sexton earned a double-double with 20 points and 11 rebounds for MVL.
St. Clair advances to face Glencoe-Silver Lake at 7 p.m. Thursday at Glencoe-Silver Lake
Waseca 76 Sibley East 34
The Blue Jays’ bid to return to the state tile game remains alive.
Deron Russell led Waseca with 22 points. Owen Honstad netted 20 points. Ethan Hiller brought down 18 rebounds and scored eight points.
Waseca hosts Maple River, which defeated Norwood Young America 61-46, at 7 p.m. Thursday.
Lake Crystal-Wellcome Memorial 78 Waterville-Elysian-Morristown 54
Once again, the Knights had a balanced attack on the offensive end. Braxton Dudgeon led LCWM with 16 points. Jack Goeringer netted 15 points. Brayden Mathews chipped in 11 points.
LCWM plays Blue Earth at 7 p.m. Thursday at LCWM.
