MANCELONA — Gavin Guggemos ran a sub-17-minute to win the Mancelona Invitational, just a few days after setting his personal-best time.
The Kalkaska senior ran a 16:20.7 at the Shepherd Bluejay Invitational on Saturday, then followed that up with his fourth sub-17 time in eight races this season.
His 16:58.9 won the Mancelona event by almost 15 seconds.
Elk Rapids sophomore Qwynn Darnell took second, while Traverse City Central’s junior varsity team — which won the big school division’s team title — had the next four placers in Neil Oyer, Jackson Price, Kaiden Morey and Evan Arleth. Elk Rapids junior Max Ward, TC Central’s Jack Steen and Shiloh Gersenson and Kalkaska senior Camden Moore rounded out the top 10.
The Trojans claimed the team title with 26 points, followed by Elk Rapids (53), Kalkaska (79), Cheboygan, Mancelona and Tawas.
Grand Traverse Academy won the small school boys division with 38 points, followed by East Jordan (38) and Lake Leelanau St. Mary (50).
Austin Sneed won that race in 18:08.1, with GTA’s Parker Rubin second, East Jordan senior Isaac Black third, Lake Leelanau sophomore Cody Couturier fourth and East Jordan junior Jacob Chamberlain fifth.
Runners from Gaylord claimed the top spot in both girls events, with Gaylord High freshman Katie Berkshire taking the big school division in 18:32.2 to win by over two minutes.
Gaylord St. Mary senior Miriam Murrell won the small class with a 20:00.2 to take second among all females.
Elk Rapids won the big school girls team title with 23 points, with Gaylord second, as the Elks put five runners in the top seven. That included Brynne Schulte (second), Anna Pray (third), Hunter Schellenbarger (fifth), Ella Peck (sixth) and Jaida Schulte (seventh). Mancelona senior Emily Anger (fourth), Gaylord junior Ella Spanding (eighth), Kalkaska sophomore Myah Little (ninth) and TC Central sophomore Lillian Shev (10th) rounded out the top 10.
GT Academy won the girls small school division with 22 points, with Gaylord St. Mary (60) second, Lake Leelanau (69) third and East Jordan (81) fourth.
The Mustangs placed six runners in the top nine, led by runner-up Paige Bell in 21:38.5, Shenoah Collier (third), Bailey Stephen (fourth), Addison Patrzik (fifth), Tess Hoedel (eighth) and Ava Butera (ninth). EJ’s Elke Knauf (seventh) and GSM’s Bailey Thompson (10th) rounded out the top 10.
