COOPERSVILLE — Traverse City West senior Carter Grubb broke the school record for points in a boys basketball game with 43 during an 88-72 win Saturday over Grand Rapids Forest Hills Northern.
“Going into the game, I didn’t feel great, to be honest,” Grubb said. “Then I guess the adrenaline just kicked in and I didn’t even really think about it.”
The senior forward had cramping that listed him as questionable, but that couldn’t stop the historic day.
Blake LaFaive also broke the single-game school record in assists with 15, to go with 12 points.
The Titans (10-4, 8-0 Big North) led from start to finish at the Bronco Basketball Shootout in Coopersville. Traverse City Central was also in the event and lost to Coopersville 58-32.
To go along with 43 points, Grubb had a double-double with 10 rebounds, and Owen Ribel added 24 points himself.
LaFaive and Grubb had chemistry all night in the pick-and-roll game.
Grand Rapids Forest Hills Northern senior Kyle Brown scored 42 points during the high-scoring affair.
Grubb had five dunks in the game, and his favorite was a missed dunk that resulted in a foul. He also made two of three 3-pointers.
“I just want us to keep winning,” Grubb said. “We are playing well defensively and offensively.”

TC West earns 1st BNC wrestling title in school history
Traverse City West wrestling earned its first Big North Conference championship in school history Saturday after narrowly outlasting Gaylord.
“It was a team effort. We’ve been talking about it all year,” Traverse City West coach Berard Priante said. “It’s always been about the next guy up. Whoever wrestles, they’ve got to wrestle the best they can.”
For the first time since the turn of the century, a team aside from Gaylord was crowned outright Big North champions.
Cadillac shared the conference title with the Blue Devils last season.
TC West defeated Gaylord by three points.
“Every single kid mattered today,” Priante said. “It was super important for our program for every kid to see that it doesn’t matter if you’re losing the first round. You still wrestle. It was a great team effort and I’m very proud of the kids.”
The Titans had seven finalists and four champions.
Matthew Quigley earned his third championship in a row for the Titans, while Andrew Burtt, Finn O’Brien and Gavin Brown all took home first place trophies.
It was the first high school tournament wins for O’Brien and Burtt.
The Titans sealed the deal when Brown found a way to recover and win at the 165-pound division. Brown found himself behind, but managed to turn the tide and earned a pin to clinch the first conference championship in school history.
Traverse City West heads to team districts Wednesday at Midland, battling Traverse City Central in the district semifinal to start.
“It’ll come down to pins and no pins, as it does a lot of times in these matches,” Priante said.
Gaylord winners: Joseph Galor (106); Kieran Beach (150); Luka Lehre (132).
Cadillac winners: Dominic Treiber (138); Payton Sampson (157); Shawn Paszkowski (285); Westyn Haslett (144).
Petoskey winners: Gavin Garrison (215).
