CHARLEVOIX — It’s never over until it’s over. Charlevoix learned that Thursday.
Boyne City cut into the Rayders’ seven-point lead with under two minutes remaining to tie it 44-44 in boys varsity basketball action. But the Rayders gathered themselves in the end to come away with a 51-47 win and complete the season sweep on the Ramblers to remain contenders for for a Lake Michigan Conference banner.
The victory puts the Rayders (13-3, 7-3 Lake Michigan) within reach of Elk Rapids in the LMC. The Elks took down the Rayders in their first meeting and the two won’t meet again until Thursday. The Ramblers can shake the LMC up with their meeting against Traverse City St. Francis on Tuesday.
“Anytime we play Boyne City, it’s a rivalry game. So if you can come out on the winning end, you feel lucky,” Charlevoix head coach Anthony Troshak said.
Joe Gaffney led the Rayders with 19 points, four steals and four assists. Hudson Vollmer and Vitale Collins had eight points each. Ryan Pearl finished with six points, five rebounds and three blocks.
The Ramblers got contributions from Chaz Stanek (15 points), Jaden Alger (18 points) and Ryder Peck (6 points).
