SHEPHERD — Although the Michigan High School Athletic Association cross country season is in the books after last week’s state championship finals at Michigan International Speedway, runners from across the state met Saturday to compete in the fourth annual Michigan Meet of Champions at Shepherd High School.
Buckley’s Aiden Harrand, who won her second individual state title in Division 4 last week with a personal-record time of 17:38.9, finished in eighth place in the Girls Elite 5K race Saturday. The senior ran a 17:50.7 ahead of Tuesday’s event at Buckley Community Schools when she will sign her national letter of intent to attend Wake Forest University next fall.
Other area runners finishing in the top 100 of the Elite 5K were Benzie Central’s Mylie Kelly in 16th at 18:06.3, Johannesburg-Lewiston’s Allie Nowak in 21st at 18:09, Traverse City Central’s Alexis Ball in 41st at 18:33.7, Petoskey’s Nora O’Leary in 45th at 18:35, TC Cenral’s Ella Kirkwood in 59th at 18:52.4, Gaylord’s Katie Berkshire in 68th at 18:58, Traverse City West’s Ava King in 70th at 18:58.9, Manistee’s Cecilia Postma in 85th at 19:04.6, and TC West’s Tessa Mascari in 88th at 19:05.1.
In the Boys Elite 5K, TC West’s Willem DeGood was 58th with a time of 15:52.9. He was joined in the top 100 by Cadillac’s Nolan Nixon in 68th at 15:55.1, TC Central’s Zack Truszkowski in 70th at 15:55.5 and fellow Trojan Caleb Keller in 88th at 16:00, and Mesick’s Kyle Redman in 99th at 16:06.3.
Grayling’s Drew Moore ran unattached and finished second in the Boys Elite Open 5K at 16:03.6. North Trails’ Logan Detloff was seventh at 16:11.8.
