FITHIAN — After a lightning delay pushed the game back a couple of hours, the Oakwood football team took the field to battle with Momence on Friday in the season opener for both teams.
The Comets could not handle the Redskins as Momence went on to a 40-12 win.
The Redskins took a 14-0 lead after the first quarter before Kyler Johnson scored the first touchdown of the season for Oakwood to cut the lead to 14-6, which would be the halftime score.
After Johnson’s touchdown, the game was delayed again as the scoreboard went out, which made the refs count the time on the field.
The Redskins’ offense came on in the second half with two touchdown passes from Erick Castillo and touchdown runs from Marchello Draine and Calvin Mitchell to get a 40-6 lead.
Oakwood scored the last points of the game when Jackson Dudley hit Jaethan Perez for a 5-yard score.
The Comets will try to regroup on Sept. 7 with a game against Georgetown-Ridge Farm/Chrisman.
