WEST POINT — Good Hope turned in a hard-nosed effort on Friday night, coming away with an impressive road win, 17-3, against West Point.
The Raiders (1-0) scored all 17 of their points in the third quarter and the stout defense shone for coach Alan Scott’s group all 48 minutes to limit the Warriors (0-2).
“We do the same things at halftime every week,” Scott said. “We meet with our offensive and defensive groups, figure out what went well and what didn’t, and make sure the kids understand any changes we want to make. They listened to everything we told them tonight.
“I’m very, very proud of how they played.”
A 22-yard field goal by Julio Fuentes midway through the second quarter put West Point up 3-0.
That score held until Tucker Keef hauled in a touchdown catch following a tipped pass from Parker Johnson early in the third frame. Tyler Cone notched a rushing score later in the quarter to push Good Hope’s lead to 14-3 before Robert Rodriguez made it 17-3 with a 28-yard field goal shortly afterward.
The Raiders defense took care of the rest — with a Tyler Byrd fumble recovery one of many highlights.
“We just always want to be sound in everything that we do,” Scott said. “West Point has done a good job getting the ball to their playmakers the past two weeks and they are bigger than us. We wanted to use our speed as much as we could.”
Good Hope hosts Fultondale next week. West Point, meanwhile, travels to Fairview.
