BEL AIR — WVU Potomac State lost to Harford Community 2-0 in the Region 20 Division 1 best-of-three championship series on Saturday.
No. 2 seed Potomac State (33-14) fell to top-seeded Harford (52-5), 11-1 in six innings and 6-2.
Harford is 28-1 at home and 21-0 in Region 20.
Potomac State nearly forced a decisive Game 3, but Harford’s Derek Poole blasted a pinch-hit, walk-off grand slam to left field to sweep the series.
Free passes were an issue for Potomac State pitching in both games. The Catamounts issued 13 walks and plunked two batters in the opener and nine walks and two HBP in Game 2.
Harford, meanwhile, walked just three batters across 15 innings between both contests.
Aidan Smith recorded a complete-game victory in the first game, allowing a run on five hits in six innings with seven strikeouts to two walks.
Harford reliever Matt Galli was the winning arm in the second game, tossing 2 2/3 innings of shutout ball.
Both starting arms in the second game delivered quality starts in no-decisions.
Potomac State’s Gavin Bennett allowed two runs on three hits in five innings, and Harford’s Kyle Tuthill held the Catamounts to two runs on seven hits in 6 1/3 frames.
Potomac State received three extra-base hits on the day, doubles off the bats of Jaxon Drennen, Peyton Blue and Lex Wescott.
Harford’s Jeremy Reyes homered in both games, and Jack Fitzpatrick struck a big fly in Game 1.
