NEWBURYPORT — Standing yards away, local police officers and firefighters joined forces Saturday to make the holidays a bit brighter for area children and adults.
Police officers were stationed outside Market Basket collecting food as part of its fill-a-cruiser fundraiser. The night before, officers and volunteers spent hours assembling hundreds of pre-packed bags of items for shoppers to buy and then hand off to a volunteer outside the store. At the same time, firefighters were outside Marshalls collecting as many toys as possible. Both departments have been holding food/toy drives inside the shopping plaza for years.
