The rain mostly held off as the Gloucester Fire Department and the Gloucester Firefighters Relief Association held the 136th annual Firefighters Memorial Service at Cherry Hill Cemetery on Sunday.
The service followed a short parade that stepped off from the Department of Public Works at 8:45 a.m., according to Gloucester Firefighter Joe Johnson, the president of the relief association.
The well-attended ceremony included members of the department, residents, Mayor Greg Verga, state Senate Majority Leader Bruce Tarr, R-Gloucester, and Councilor at-Large Jeff Worthley, according to the Gloucester Firefighters Local 762 Facebook page. Johnson ran the ceremony, which included singing by Judge Mary Rudolph Black. Refreshments were served at Fire Headquarters on School Street.
The union also announced on Facebook that day: “This Firefighter Sunday started off with Gloucester Firefighters on Rescue 1 and Engine 5 assisting a mother with delivering her newborn baby!” The post said the baby and mother were successfully taken to Beverly Hospital and were doing well.

The woman told police the trash was not hers, and stormed back into her apartment.
