LAWRENCE — Police said they captured a “wanted, convicted felon” who led them on an Interstate 495 chase Thursday evening.
Anthony Gil, 19, of Lawrence, was arrested after the “brief, authorized” pursuit by detectives on the Lawrence police gang unit and state troopers around 6 p.m. Thursday, according to a police report.
Gil was suspected of carrying a firearm and wanted on related warrants prompting the investigation, police said.
Officers stopped the car he was driving, but Gil took off with two adult female passengers “narrowly avoiding a collision with a police cruiser,” according to a report.
Gil drove a vehicle on to I-495 with Lawrence detectives and then troopers and a state police helicopter in pursuit.
“The suspect ultimately crashed while attempting to take the Route 2A exit in Littleton, where the vehicle became lodged on a road sign,” police said.
Police said following a brief foot pursuit, Gil was taken into custody. He was charged on the outstanding firearm warrants, multiple charges related to motor vehicle violations and the pursuit.
No injuries were reported.
On Friday morning, gang-unit detectives and troopers searched the area where Gil was believed to have discarded a firearm during the pursuit.
A Glock .40 caliber was found a few feet from the roadside along with several rounds of ammunition. A loaded magazine was also located on the rumble strip, police said.
The investigation is ongoing and additional charges may be forthcoming, police said.
