Goalkeeping is often times one of the more underappreciated and overlooked positions in soccer. Having a reliable shot-stopper between the posts can swing a tight game in your team’s favor, or make a potential blowout loss appear that much more respectable on the scoresheet.
At Gloucester High, varsity girls head coach Katina Tibbetts has one of those talented and dependable individuals on her side, and so far this fall it’s certainly made an impact on their games.
Last week alone, that junior keeper, Jessica Harvey, helped keep things close in the first half against a loaded Danvers High team in Gloucester’s season opener. Two days later, she faced a whopping 34 shots against a formidable Saugus opponent and stopped 27 of them. To cap off a phenomenal week, Harvey made 23 more saves to help the Fishermen secure their first win of the season, 2-1 over Salem.
“Jess is a rock for this team. There have been many situations where I say, ‘thank goodness for Jess’,” said Tibbetts. “It’s been a joy to see her grow over the years and find her voice as a keeper. It’s only getting better from here.”
Harvey had another impressive showing in Monday’s scoreless draw against Swampscott, securing her first shutout of the young campaign. As the Fishermen gradually inch their way back to full strength (they’ve been dealing with numerous injuries), Harvey’s play has been huge in helping keep the team afloat in the ever-competitive Northeastern Conference.
“I love being part of the defense, working together,” added Harvey. “It means a lot to be a part of this team and grow with these players over time. I’m excited to see how the team develops throughout the season; we all have a lot of potential to have a great fall.”
