The Gloucester High field hockey team appears to be on a mission this fall — and junior standout Fiona Black is right at the forefront of it.
A talented forward who earned NEC All-Conference and Gloucester Daily Times all-star recognition last season, Black has been on a torrid scoring pace since the year began back in early September.
She’s up to 13 goals in seven games already, helping the Fishermen to a perfect record thus far. Over four games in the past week alone, Black has recorded a whopping three hat tricks in team victories over Malden Catholic, Peabody (twice) and Manchester Essex.
“I would definitely say that she has been our top performer,” said Gloucester head coach Lauren Riley-Gove. “She’s elevated her game to the next level this year and is really just making things happen.”
Black netted the first of her three hatties in a dominant 7-2 victory over previously unbeaten MC last Tuesday. She followed that up with another three goals in a 10-0 drubbing of the Tanners, played a role, yet didn’t score against the CAL powerhouse Hornets, and then dropped in the final hat trick in another shutout of Peabody (5-0) on Monday evening.
As impressive as her scoring has been (she’s just three goals away from matching her goal total from 2025), Black has been impacting the game in other ways, too.
“She has solid passing, great shooting, and her sped and stick work has come so far in just a short time. It’s very impressive,” added Riley-Gove.
Black has been working extremely well alongside fellow starters Mia Rodolosi, Julia Palk, Sam Tucker, Liv Madruga, Emme Sabia and Mackayla Allen. Collectively, they’ve been nothing short of a force to be reckoned with in the early stages of the campaign.
“They have just been so dominant. I’m very proud of them all,” said Riley-Gove.
Gloucester will look to make it eight straight wins (and a 4-0 mark in NEC play) to open the year when it hosts Danvers at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday.
