PLATTSBURGH — An accessibility construction project will begin on Plattsburgh Town Hall starting July 13.
The town has selected Luck Bros. Inc. for the renovation of the main entrance and north parking lot to improve accessibility.
The design and implementation process was handled by Architectural & Engineering Design Associates, P.C.
“I had been a supporter of this project as deputy town supervisor and IDEA committee member. Now, as supervisor, I am happy to be ensuring it gets done,” Plattsburgh Town Supervisor Chuck Kostyk said in a press release.
“I am grateful to the Planning and Community Development Department for their commitment to spearheading this effort, and for the entire town team pulling together the necessary pieces to bring us to this point of implementation. It has truly been a team effort.
“I look forward to providing better access to Town Hall for our staff and visitors.”
This project was identified in 2023 as a necessary capital improvement. It includes re-grading the parking lot, installation of a new sidewalk and a new vestibule with push-button handicap access.
Work is expected to take approximately three weeks, during which the north parking lot and entrance will be closed. Visitors are directed to use the door facing Banker Road or call ahead for curb side service at 518-562-6813.
It’s expected to be finished by the end of August.
This project was identified as critical for providing service, as well as access to Town of Plattsburgh facilities for all visitors and users.
Town staff estimated over 2,600 people with mobility challenges visit Town Hall for recreation programs, handicap placards and various other services. That number represents more than 20% of the resident population.
“This project was really a grassroots initiative within the Town of Plattsburgh team,” Town of Plattsburgh Senior Planner Jessica Kogut said in the release.
“Staff and town officials identified this accessibility issue, and the IDEA committee worked hard alongside town leadership to coordinate the funding and efforts needed to have the design and bid materials created in partnership with AEDA, P.C.
“The Planning and Community Development Department took the lead on implementation, working closely with the business office and town board to establish a funding commitment to see the project through. We are now working with Luck Bros., AEDA, P.C. and our Facilities Department to kick this project off on July 13th.
“We appreciate the public’s patience as we conduct Town Business around a construction zone for the next several weeks.”
