PLATTSBURGH — The Polar Plunge will return this month, hosted by the Plattsburgh City Police for the first time.
On March 12, Chief of Police Jarrod Trombley led a press conference by thanking the athletes and agencies involved in the plunge and revealed this year’s theme: Spirit.
The Polar Plunge is the largest fundraising event for Special Olympics New York. The money raised goes toward athletes expenses’ during the Special Olympics, including travel and food.
“The Special Olympics provides year-round support for 22 different sports across three seasons, giving athletes an opportunity to compete, build confidence and be part of something bigger than themselves,” Director of Development and Impact for the Special Olympics New York Chris Hughes said.
Last year, the event saw 251 plungers and raised $18,000.
“This year, we’re hoping to go even bigger in partnership with the Plattsburgh City Police,” Hughes said.
The event takes place Saturday at noon at Plattsburgh City Beach. Registration begins at 10 a.m.
Plungers can start or join a team at any point before the noon deadline at the event or online. All team members must raise a minimum of $25 to participate.
“The cause is clear: We’re here to support the athletes … Bring your teams. Bring your costumes. We’re going to laugh, we’re gonna freeze, but it’s all for good reason,” Trombley said.
