Community volunteers and local leaders joined forces on Friday at the Packard Court Community Center for a hands-on tree planting event focused on improving air quality and advancing environmental justice in Niagara Falls.
This initiative was sponsored by AES US Renewables & Power, the Arbor Day Foundation and the Niagara Falls Housing Authority, in partnership with the Create a Healthier Niagara Falls Collaborative.
Residents in the neighborhood have long faced disproportionate exposure to air pollution linked to nearby industrial and manufacturing activity, organizers said. The tree planting was a step toward restoring balance — helping to mitigate harmful environmental impacts while investing in the long-term health and resilience of the community.
“Planting trees is more than beautification — it’s a direct investment in public health,” said Brian Archie, director of the Create a Healthier Niagara Falls Collaborative. “For communities that have carried the burden of environmental harm, this is about restoration, healing, and taking tangible steps toward equity.”
Trees play a critical role in improving air quality, reducing heat, and creating healthier living environments. This effort reflects a broader commitment to address environmental disparities and ensure that all residents have access to clean, safe, and sustainable spaces.
A lunch was served following the work of planting the trees.
