City of Cullman officials remained tight-lipped about specific details regarding the development of a new sporting goods store on King Edward Street, but the Planning Commission reviewed and signed off on the project’s site plans Tuesday, Sept. 3.
Both the city of Cullman and Cullman County declined naming the development — referred to simply as the “Sporting Goods Store Project,” in legal documents — when approving a $1.2 million tax rebate in June. The Cullman City Planning Commission continued this trend while signing off on the project’s submitted site plans.
According to a letter submitted to the commission by the project’s engineer, the property located next to Walgreens won’t require any substantial modifications, but plans did include repaving and striping the existing parking lot. The city building department also reported it had submitted a recent traffic impact study to the Alabama Department of Transportation on Tuesday.
The development will include the construction of a 55,000 square/foot, stand alone retail store and is predicted to create roughly 80 new jobs when completed.
The commission also approved site plans for the development of two new office buildings along U.S. Hwy. 278.
The first proposed office building will be located at the intersection of Richard Avenue NE and Hwy. 278 near Saint Bernard. The submitted plans showed the southern portion of the empty 2.43 acre lot being cleared to construct an office building and retention pond for storm water runoff.
The commission approved the submittal with the contingency that plans include the development of a sidewalk along both Hwy. 278 and Richard Avenue.
The second development, referred to as the “Cullman Professional Building,” will be located at the corner of Hwy. 278 and Hickory Avenue SW across from Werners Trading Company.
