CUMBERLAND — Allegany got the timely hits it needed and a strong pitching performance, leading the Campers (4-3) to a 4-0 upset victory over No. 1 Frankfort on Monday.
“That’s a good win for us,” Allegany head coach Jon Irons said. “Frankfort’s a very good baseball team. I felt like this group has been all around clicking and putting a complete game together. For the most part, we did today. Couple little things I’d like to see us clean up, but for the most part I felt we played a much more complete game today.”
The Falcons (8-3) average 8.1 runs and 7.6 hits per game, but were shut out and held to five hits against a pair of sophomores in Kohen Madden and Kane Williams.
“Just couldn’t get the big hit,” Frankfort head coach Matt Miller said. “Sometimes that happens, it’s baseball. Baseball’s a game of adversity and failure. Today, we didn’t get the job done when we needed to.”
Madden went 4 1/3 innings as Alco’s starter, allowing four hits and two walks with three strikeouts.
Madden left two runners stranded in the second inning and a runner on third to end the fourth.
“Kohen was out there bull-dogging on the mound,” Irons said. “Frankfort can hit, they can flat out hit. He did a good job of missing barrels all day long.”
Williams took over with the bases loaded and one out in the top of the fifth.
A strikeout and fly out got Williams out of the jam.
Williams also got out a jam in the seventh, leaving two runners on to end the game.
He pitched 2 2/3 innings, allowing a hit and a walk with four punch outs.
“Kohen and Kane are both mentally tough kids,” Irons said. “They are not afraid of the moment, they’re mentally tough. They trust our approach and came out and weren’t scared today. That goes a long way.”
Frankfort had five players record a hit and added three walks, but couldn’t get the big hit to spark a rally.
“Their pitchers threw strikes, we can’t keep getting behind in the counts so you have to attack the baseball,” Miller said. “That’s what we’ve tried to do.”
The Campers scored a run each in four innings with Madden responsible for the first two.
He grounded out in the first before singling in the third and taking second on an error.
Kyran Freeman reached on a bunt single to leadoff the fifth, then rounded the bases on a bad pickoff, a wild pitch and scored on a dropped third strike.
Landyn Ansel added an insurance run with a double to the right center gap in the sixth.
“I thought we had some good at-bats today, got some bunts down,” Irons said. “Played some good small ball and we were able to get some hits when we needed them.”
Lanson Orndorf went the distance for the Falcons, allowing four runs on seven hits and two walks with three strikeouts.
“He threw great, they just got timely hits and we didn’t,” Miller said. “Both teams are really good teams, both teams played good defense. They just got hits and we didn’t.”
Frankfort plays Jefferson on Tuesday and Berkeley Springs at home on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
Allegany hosts Mountain Ridge (2-5) on Wednesday at 4:30 p.m.
“I hope we get rolling in the right direction,” Irons said. “I feel like we’re much better than what we’ve shown so far. I feel like we were a few little things away from putting a complete game together. Hopefully, we build on this going forward.”
