TRAVERSE CITY — Rockford’s offense wasn’t riveting Tuesday, managing only eight hits in a doubleheader against Traverse City pitching.
The Pit Spitters needed only two pitchers to accomplish that.
Max Hammond threw a seven-inning one-hitter to close out the sweep of Rockford with a 4-0 shutout. That came after Trevor Landen struck out eight in seven innings in the 6-2 opener in Tuesday’s Northwoods League baseball games at Turtle Creek Stadium in Traverse City.
The Spitters are the only first-half winner that’s also leading its division in the second half. Only Green Bay sit in the top half of its division after taking the first half.
Grady Mee, Aaron Piasecki, Carter Hain and Andrew Mack each had two RBI and Isaac Sturgess drove in two runs with a double in the opener. Mee hit a triple among his two base hits.
Piasecki added two more hits in the nightcap, going 4-for-8 for the day and sitting at a .405 batting average. Brooks Sartain doubled for TC’s only other hit.
Rockford fielded a starting lineup with only two players hitting over .220 as Hammond faced only 27 batters in seven frames.
Traverse City (35-19, 14-6 second half) hosts Rockford (21-32, 8-13) again Wednesday at 7:05 p.m.
