THOMASVILLE — The Pink Boots Society, an organization rooted in women who brew, held a collaborative brew day on Friday. The brew day combined women from Hubs & Hops, along with Tvelo to craft a specialty pour in honor of Women’s History Month.
Hubs and Hops Assistant Manager Laura Williford explained each year the Pink Boots Society puts out a blend with Yakima Chief Hops. The blends are sent across the nation, as various chapters of the Pink Boots Society test the hops and send in their favorite blend to be featured.
This year’s blends included Ahtanum, El Dorado, HBC 638, and Idaho 7. According to the Pink Boots Society, brewers could expect the blends to contain “berry and citrus punctuated with peppery earthiness and floral notes.”
Tvelo and Hubs & Hops decided to blend a citrus IPA with the hops.
“You have a little leniency when using the hops,” Williford said. “You can do a saison or a lager, but we really looked at what do the people of Thomasville like to drink.”
Once the brewing of the citrus IPA is complete, $1 from every sale will go toward a scholarship provided by the Pink Boots Society for women in fermentation.
Additionally, $3 is donated per pound of hops purchased to create a specialty brew.
Last year, the Pink Boots Society raised $137,565 for education from their hops sales.
Williford said Thomasville does not currently have a Pink Boots Society chapter, but she hopes that through Tvelo and Hubs & Hops, they can drum up some interest in women who brew.
“We usually drive to Orlando, Jacksonville, Atlanta, or Athens to do different Pink Boots things at least once a month,” Williford said. “Of course, being from Thomasville it’s hard to get up there, but we enjoy meeting the new people.”
Williford hopes to continue meeting new people when Tvelo hosts their brew reveal in early April. A firm date has yet to be announced, but as the brew gets closer to being released, more details will become available.
