PLATTSBURGH — Even though it didn’t count as a CVAC league game, Saturday’s baseball matchup between Plattsburgh High and Ticonderoga was the best contest on a busy weekend.
The Hornets scored a run in the first inning that held up for a 1-0 victory over the Sentinels.
Diego Rios struck out nine in 6.1 innings for the win, and Cooper Holland got the final two outs for the save.
Losing pitcher Owen teRiele stood out as he went the first 5.1 innings and fanned six for Ticonderoga.
“Today was an exciting high school baseball game,” PHS coach Joe Tolosky said. “Diego was outstanding on the mound for us. He set the tone with his control and command. Cooper also came in a big spot for us when we needed the save.
“We struggled a bit offensively, but their pitcher was also on.”

SARANAC LAKE — Tripp Hicks gave Northern Adirondack a quality start in the first game, and the Bobcats went on to get two wins in a rare CVAC doubleheader.
It was the second game of the season for the Bobcats and the first for the Red Storm, and pitchers on both teams struggled with control.
Hicks didn’t have that problem as he went five innings, plus one batter in the sixth. He settled in after the first inning and allowed two hits, two runs and struck out 12. Hicks struck out seven of eight batters in one stretch.
He also added a two-run double and three RBIs in all, while Ahanu Sequin had a RBI single and two RBIs in all.
Jackson Daunais finished with two hits for Saranac Lake, and Ethan Knight added a double.
In the second contest, Dawson Skidds led the way offensively for the Bobcats with a single, double and four RBIs. Hicks and Emmett LaClair each added two hits and two RBIs.
Sequin struck out 10 the first four innings for the pitching victory and Brayden Bushey the final three for the save.
Knight accounted for three hits and two RBIs to lead Saranac Lake. Levi Lambert added two hits, while Connor Gillis and Daunais both had doubles.

SARANAC — Keagen Theriault went six innings for the pitching win and struck out eight while not allowing an earned run.
Deacon Whitmarsh had two of Peru’s eight hits. Gabe Moore and Kalib Smith each added a double.
Robbie Squier’s double and two singles accounted for three of the Spartans’ six hits.
“We did a poor job throwing strikes early on in the game,” Saranac coach Robby Knowles said. “They had just one hit in the first two innings, but we gave up four runs.
“Theriault moved the ball around the zone and limited solid contact. Squier had a really good approach at the plate and saw the ball well, but both physical and mental errors plagued us.”

SARANAC — Winning pitcher Jackson Dorsett tossed four shutout innings with seven strikeouts, and the Sentinels scored nine runs in the top of the first inning in their non-conference win.
Dorsett and Owen teRiele finished with three hits each, while Trevor Blanchard, Parker Davis and Rowen Bechtold added two apiece. Four of Ticonderoga’s hits went for extra bases.
Brody Macomber and Matt Owen accounted for two hits apiece for the Spartans, who trailed 16-0 at one time.
“We left too many pitches up the middle of the strike zone, and they did a good job putting the ball in play,” Saranac coach Robby Knowles said. “We made a couple of errors in the first inning we never recovered from.
“Dorsett did a really good job of pitching backwards and working ahead. Our at-bats got better after he left the mound, but we need to be more competitive at the plate throughout the game and clean things up defensively.”
