PLATTSBURGH — The saying goes that you want to be peaking at the right time.
The Plattsburgh boys lacrosse team seems to be doing just that as it closed out a busy week with back-to-back wins on Friday and Saturday.
“It’s huge for us,” senior attacker Alek Duprey said. “We had a rough start this season. Some of that was us, but some of that we had a tough schedule. We played the number one, number two team back to back to start.
“We needed a couple more games like this and get some other guys involved. We just have to get some younger guys into the game. The older guys, like me, Declan Baker and Shamus Bibeau, just have to let them know what they’re doing. We just want to keep growing the game, not a lot of people know about this fun and great sport.”
Friday was memorable for Duprey as he recorded his 100th career goal against Franklin Academy in the fourth quarter of a 17-2 win.
It has been an enjoyable final few weeks of the season for Duprey who recorded his 100th career point against SLP, May 6.
“It’s awesome,” Duprey said. “I mean, points are always more important than goals, but I love scoring.
“I’ve been playing this game since kindergarten and instantly fell in love with it. My cousins in Myrtle Beach introduced me to the game. I didn’t even know it existed around here. My mom signed me up, put a stick in my hand and I never looked back. Just had love for the game. I hope it continues to grow, continues to get bigger, and we just see this game take over.”
He’s been one of the many spark plugs that have seen the Hornets improve as the season went on.
FRIDAY
PLATTSBURGH 17
FRANKLIN ACADEMY 2
It was showcased Friday as eight different PHS players scored a goal.
It was extra special as Duprey scored his 100th goal, Logan Lehman recorded his first career goal.
Plattsburgh built a 9-1 halftime lead and just kept the pressure on as it outshot the Huskies, 40-18.
Killian Baker led the way with five goals as Declan Baker and Duprey added three. Bibeau chipped in two goals while Coope Daivs, Hayden Lozier, Decan Giroux and Lehman got one each.
Jahvari Anderson got in the score book with one assist.
“We played some good team lacrosse tonight,” PHS Co-Head Coach Jamie Lozier said. “The boys played within the system and everyone got some good minutes in.
“We made some adjustments at the half and won more ground balls. Those turn into possessions that lead to scores. Declan and Killian Baker combined for 8 goals and 14 points on the night. I’m proud of our young guys for growing into their roles.”
SATURDAY
PLATTSBURGH 11
ST. LAWRENCE 9
Under the lights and in the rain. Smiles were still had across the PSUC Fieldhouse lacrosse field as the Hornets avenged a loss from earlier in the season, defeating St. Lawrence, 11-9.
It was a game Plattsburgh had to rally in as it found itself down two at the break. PHS, however, took care of business in other facets of the game in winning faceoffs, ground balls and shots.
Five different Hornets etched their name in the book as Killian and Declan Baker led the way with four and three goals, respectively.
Duprey added two more goals with Giroux and Ryan Campbell recording one goal each.
Layden Delaronde was steadfast in net making nine saves.
“Tonight was our Senior Night and I think we played our best game of the year so far,” Lozier said. “ Everyone did their job and did it well. Alek Duprey embraced his role as a distributor tonight.
“Declan Baker continued his strong Senior season, adding three goals to the effort tonight. Defensively Nate Zielinski, Connor Duda, and John Bourgeois locked down a very talented St. Lawrence offense. Layden Delaronde played an outstanding second half, when we needed him the most. Hayden Lozier, Evan Patrie, Nolan Miner, and all of the Middies were aggressive at both ends of the field and that made all the difference for us tonight.”
