PETERSBURG, W.Va. — Petersburg punched its ninth consecutive trip to the state tournament, defeating Frankfort, 14-6, on Friday for a Class AA, Region II co-title.
The Vikings (24-4) trailed the Falcons (20-12) 3-0 early before a five-run third inning. Petersburg added three runs in the fifth and four in the sixth to win via run rule.
Karlie DiBenedetto walked it off with a two-out RBI single in the sixth.
Ella Chew and Ella Markwell both homered and had four runs batted in. Miley Tingler was a homer away from the cycle, driving in two runs, Chew (Potomac State commit) also had three hits, and Chew, Cheyenne Sites and Markwell each doubled.
Gracie Carpenter was the winning pitcher in relief, allowing three runs on six hits in four innings.
Elizabeth Crowe, Sydney Robosson, Riley Lynch and Kaitlyn Hudson had two-hit games for Frankfort. Raygan Grogg, Lynch and Robosson doubled.
Peyton Kimble took the loss in the circle.
Petersburg, the state runner-up the past two seasons, will compete for the title at South Charleston’s Little Creek Park. The tournament will be held May 27-June 4.
This is the first installment of the eight-team, double-elimination state tournament.
Keyser 5, Bridgeport 0
KEYSER, W.Va. — Leighton Johnson fanned 16 in a two-hit shutout to power Keyser past Bridgeport for the Class AAA, Region II co-championship on Saturday.
Keyser (22-4) last made states in 2024, falling in the Class AA title game.
Johnson expended 118 pitches in the seven-inning complete game.
Sophie Lambka belted a solo home run, doubled and scored twice, and Brielle Root doubled and drove in two runs.
Bridgeport’s Addison Mike took the loss. Mike also went the distance, surrendering five runs on four hits in six frames of work.
Lincoln 8, Moorefield 0
SHINNSTON, W.Va. — Lincoln secured the other state tourney spot from Class AA, Region II with a win over Moorefield in the region co-final on Friday.
Lincoln’s Adriana Elder, Brogan Sampson and Sadie Jones hit home runs, and Elder tossed a three-hit shutout with seven strikeouts.
Moorefield’s Annie Barr took the loss. The Yellow Jackets finish with a 16-17 record.
