LAKE PLACID — It was a memorable day for Peru last Thursday and Friday at the Section VII Golf Championships at Craig Wood Golf Course.
A day after the Champlain Valley Athletic Conference champions won the team event, the Nighthawks’ Nick Palmer repeated as Section VII individual champion by six strokes with a 71-75-146 over the two days.
“Nick had another solid round of golf,” Peru coach Ryon O’Connell said. “He plays a lot of golf and dedicates himself to the sport. Nick has spent numerous hours practicing in the offseason, and it was evident this weekend.”
Palmer won by six strokes over runner-up and Peru teammate Liam Clark, who carded a 76-76-152.
“Liam is a very consistent player who keeps himself out of trouble,” O’Connell said.
Peru will be represented on the nine-golfer, all-Section VII team that will compete in the NYSPHSAA event by three golfers.
The Nighthawks’ Cooper Sweeney finished with a 79-78-157 to tie for fourth place overall.
“Cooper had a great back nine to take fourth in the section,” O’Connell said.
“It’s a great honor to bring these three players back to the state tournament. They have some experience as they went last year.”
Lake Placid’s Carver Bell had a strong sectional and ended up in third place overall with a 80-76-156 total.
Sweeney tied for fourth place with Boquet Valley’s Braden Liberi, who came in with a 80-77-157. Meanwhile, Liberi was one of two golfers from the Mountain & Valley Athletic Conference to qualify for the all-Section VII team.
Rounding out the state qualifiers were Ticonderoga’s Noah Wells (79-79-158), Schroon Lake’s Ronan Deslauriers (80-78-158) and Moriah’s Silas Reeder (81-77-158) all tied for sixth place, and Saranac Lake’s Ryan McGinnis-Theis (77-83-160) in ninth.
Eight golfers on the second day broke 80 on Friday.
