Katie Pittman, a biology student at Dalton State College and an avid bird-watcher, is always happy to share her knowledge and love for nature, said Amy Hartline, executive director of Keep Dalton-Whitfield Beautiful.
Keep Dalton-Whitfield Beautiful is a local nonprofit that, as its website notes, focuses on volunteer “activities that promote litter prevention, beautification, sustainability and water protection.”
“Katie has been helping us with the Rootin’ for the Ridge program with Keep Dalton-Whitfield Beautiful and has been amazing,” Hartline said.
The goal of Rootin’ for the Ridge is to educate community members about the diversity of plants and animals that live on Rocky Face Ridge as well as how the ridge helps provide flood control, cools the air in the summer and stores carbon.
“She has led a birding walk and helped with a bird-banding demonstration,” said Hartline.
Bird banding is a technique used for studying and identifying individual birds.
“She’s great at talking to anyone that comes to the events and teaching them in an engaging and easily understood way,” said Hartline. “She has been involved with our organization a short time and has already made a big impact this year.”
For her efforts to help others learn more about the local environment, the Dalton Daily Citizen names Katie Pittman Person of the Week.
